BangShift Tech: How to Repair the Kickdown Switch in a Turbo Transmission Aug 17, Brian Lohnes BangShift News 1 Nearly every automatic transmission has some kind of kick down apparatus and they are all different.

The two new recalls for ignition switch issues are the latest major campaign since February, when GM began calling back 2. One recall for unintended ignition key rotation covers 6. GM said the fatal crashes occurred in older model full-size sedans being recalled for inadvertent ignition key rotation. There is no conclusive evidence that the defect caused those crashes, GM said.

That has hardened my resolve to set a new industry standard for vehicle safety, quality and excellence. GM CEO said earlier this month the automaker was conducting an ongoing review of all outstanding safety issues with the goal of resolving all outstanding issues by the end of the month, which is today. Earlier this month, GM recalled about 4 million cars for ignition switch problems in two separate campaigns. GM linked the recall of 3.

GM also recalled more than , current-generation Chevrolet Camaros for ignition switch problems linked to three crashes in which air bags failed to deploy. In the previously announced Impala ignition switch recall, GM said it will rework or replace the ignition keys on some cars in the U.

Ask Away: How Do You Hook up a Turbo 400 Kickdown? (Hint: It’s Not Like Other 3-Speeds)

This action typically creates a mechanical symphony as the secondary barrels open, the transmission downshifts, and the speedometer and tachometer sweep clockwise. But if a Turbo was transplanted into an older Pontiac without installing some type of kickdown switch, a large part of the fun could be missing. The most common three-speed automatic transmissions used in performance applications today are the Turbo and Turbo Both are strong, reliable units that are internally calibrated to up-shift in a predetermined range based on a combination of engine load and speed.

Only needed if dropping the pan and replacing the ATF filter. Start by raising the car on jackstands no one is considering working under the car with just a tire jack, right? Use four jackstands, as the transmission must be level during the fluid check. Some fluid should pour out – with the engine off, the fluid level in the pan will be higher than it is during operation.

However, far more fluid came out of my transmission than should have. There should be a nice flow of black fluid. Compare new fluid to old fluid – yes Remove the ATF pan – there are many bolts securing the pan. Note that there will still be some fluid in the pan, so take care. With the pan off, you’ll see the valve body and ATF filter.

Remove the two bolts securing the filter, and gently pull off the filter.

The short answer there is, its up to you. There are benefits for using a turbo setup: It’s already there, you don’t have to fabricate anything, just turn up the boost and let it ride. Also, there are some subtle design differences between the turbo and the NA engines.

Volvo’s turbocharged engines have a lower static compression ratio than their NA engines, for the B21F its 9.

Not that long ago, a fast street car meant compromises, including deep gears, high-rpm highway cruising, and poor mileage. But the high-tech ’80s and ’90s have brought us more than just electronic fuel injection.

Most common housings for this turbo are 0. This is a good turbo if you have an automatic, and can be daily driven. Somewhat bigger than the TS04, this turbo can make rwhp. It requires an upgraded fuel system. Capable of making rwhp, the T66 is a bigger turbo yet, this is probably as big a turbo as I would recommend for the street, it makes full boost right around rpm on most cars, a significant amount of lag, but not horrendous… full boost being 1. Slightly bigger than the T66, the T70 is probably not a streetable turbo.

Lag is a couple hundred rpm more than the T66, power output ranges from rwhp… perhaps a bit more with headwork… This is a nice turbo for drag racing. These turbos are only good for drag cars for the most part, lag is far more than smaller turbos, power outputs are from rwhp.

Although the forum has a search feature, it is often easier to just ask your question. That’s what the forum is for. Well to lessen repeat questions, I’ve attempted to gather together some great discussions on TBI- and Vortec-related performance topics into one big post — perhaps the ultimate post. I have used a running FAQ-type commentary to minimize reading through a ton of posts and so that I can share with you my experiences and expertise.

Turbo Transmissions December, – Jim O’Clair A very interesting automatic transmission to consider, when replacing that tired old transmission or even upgrading an older unit like the Powerglide, is the Turbo Hydra-Matic

If your speedometer reads wrong, don’t suffer. A very easy operation. Simply lift the front of the car and find the cable going to the side of the tranny. The cable is removed easily and the gear slides into a metal housing that also is easily pried out of the tranny with a screwdriver. You need to calculate how far off your speedo is before you pull the gear.

This particular gear has 22 teeth, so buying the 20 tooth gear makes the speedo more accurate, although I think it is still around 2 mph short at 70 MPH. Anyway, the point is, if you have an inaccurate speedo, its a very easy fix and inexpensive too. However, ensure the reason that your speedo is off because a different plastic gear is used for your specific combination of differential gears, tire diameter and transmision.

Check the manufacturer info on things like recommended tire size, rear end ratio, drive gear in the transmission pain in the butt if this is wrong , and driven gear specs. If you require a reduction gear, that info is on there too. Especially if you have numerically high gear ratios like 3. All these things matched together equal fairly accurate speedo readings.

The C-clamp method of compressing the clutch packs took a couple of extra hands be sure to compress the C-clamps evenly and there were a ton of small parts to keep track of. Remember that the TC is always being spun by the engine.

Any hobbyist who transplants a Turbo into an older Pontiac originally equipped with another transmission must also install some type of kickdown switch, or proper downshifts cannot occur.

By Andrew Wolf April 01, The vaunted Turbo-Hydramatic TH transmission, known more commonly as the Turbo , was developed back in the early s — making its debut in model year Cadillacs — as a three-speed automatic transmission. The transmission was quickly heralded for the number of advantages it delivered, including its impressive strength and the efficiency of its planetary gear design.

Those key points, as history has shown, were not lost on the racers of the era, who found the Turbo to be an excellent piece for the strenuous conditions they put vehicles through. ATI Performance Products has been at the forefront of aftermarket Turbo development with their two- and three-speed variants, housed within their own aftermarket case. The car will feature power from a cubic inch small block with a Vortech supercharger, with plenty of horsepower on tap being put to the pavement through an 8.

The Turbo At A Glance Despite all of the advances in engineering and technology in the decades since its launch, the Turbo is still widely considered one of the greatest original production transmissions ever conceived. This was made possible both with the addition of a large multi-plate clutch that could take high doses of input torque, and the cast iron center support for the concentric shafts that mate the clutch to the gear train.

Turbo Background The production Turbo-Hydramatic benefited greatly in its development from a licensing deal that allowed GM to utilize the Simpson gear set design. The Turbo was the first three-speed transmission with the Simpson gearing, featuring over-running clutches that exhibited first and second gear interaction — in essence, there was no need to simultaneously release and engage the clutch to move from second to third gear.

But, driven by power levels, gear ratios, and race distance to some extent, the Turbo has found new legs as a two-speed, just like its GM cousin, the Powerglide. The Turbo And The Powerglide Choosing between the mighty Powerglide and a Turbo is largely a matter of horsepower, weight, and tire type.
